Domestic Imports to UNTHSC from Unapproved Sources

When ordering animals from domestic universities, government agencies, or other unapproved sources it important to determine the present and past health history of the supplying institution. Canada is not considered part of the United States. To make arrangements, animal orders are coordinated between the UNTHSC Investigator and Tito Nelson in the DLAM Office.  It is important to have the following information when you contact  Mrs.Nelson.

  • Previous 2 reports of sentinel information from the supplying institution
  • All mouse sources must be certified free of Sendai virus, Mouse Hepatitis Virus (MHV), Pneumonia Virus of Mice (PVM), Mycoplasma pulmonis, Reovirus 3 (REO3), Minute Virus of Mice (MVM), Theiler’s Murine Encephalomyelitis Virus (GDVII), Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus (LCMV), Mouse Rotavirus (EDIM), Ectromelia Virus (Mousepox), Mouse Parvovirus (MPV), and parasites (mites and pinworms) before entering the barrier.
  • All rat sources must be certified free of Mycoplasma pulmonis, Sendai Virus, Pneumonia Virus of Mice, Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus, Rat Parvovirus, Sialodacryoadenitis Virus/Rat Coronavirus, Kilham Rat Virus, and Toolan’s H-1, parasites (mites and pinworms) before entry into the barrier.

Specific pathogens to be excluded from the rodent barrier facilities will be determined by the veterinarian.  The veterinarian or designee will inform the Investigators of any new developments in pathogen detection or threats posed by emerging pathogens or commercial vendor outbreaks.

Please ensure the animals are delivered directly to UNTHSC if possible.  This may involve the use of a broker.  The Dept.of Lab Animal Medicine can put you in contact with a broker, if needed.

The final step to approving a domestic animal shipment involves a brief meeting with the Department’s veterinarian to ensure the animals arrive safe, sound, and with minimal disruption.  Only after this meeting has happened and the necessary documentation is given to the UNTHSC investigator or their designee can the animals be received at UNTHSC.

For information regarding p rocedures governing the international importation of animals, please contact Tito Nelson.
