Research Advisory Committee

The research core advisory committee is composed of investigators with an outstanding level of accomplishments and national reputation in research. The members of this advisory committee will mentor and advise the research core director, research core management committee and investigators on the scientific aspects of the research projects. Specifically, the research advisory committee will provide oversight of the entire Research Core with an emphasis placed on 1) evaluation of the progress of the two primary projects to insure forward movement and success, and 2) the development of an implementation plan for follow projects and grant applications that are directed at testing strategies for reducing the health disparities being studied. The members of the research core advisory committee include:


Dr. Peter B. Raven,

Professor,
Department of Integrative Physiology,
University of North Texas Health Science Center.

Dr. Raven has more than 30 years of experience in the investigation of human cardiovascular physiology. He has had an extensive history of NIH funding and has contributed to the research training of more than 20 minority students through programs at UNTHSC.


Kingman P. Strohl,

M.D.,
Professor, Department of Internal Medicine,
Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Strohl is a pulmonologist and renowned sleep medicine specialist with over 30 years of experience in sleep apnea-related research including leading an NIH Center of Excellence in sleep. His recent research has included a focus of familial predictors of sleep apnea and associated cardiovascular disease risk particularly in the African-American community.


Clyde Yancy,

M.D.,
Professor, Department of Internal Medicine,
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Yancy is a cardiologist recognized as a leader in basic and clinical research in congestive heart failure. As an African-American, he has been a leader both locally and nationally in discussions to reduce health disparities as it relates to cardiovascular disease.
