Title:
"Use of Promotores to improve cardiovascular health among Hispanics in Fort Worth"
Principal Investigator:
Nuha A. Lackan, Ph.D.
Abstract:
Cardiovascular disease and stroke are a major cause of death and disability in the United States. Hispanics are
disproportionately affected by cardiovascular disease because of the high prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
in this population. Promotores, lay Hispanic health workers, are respected members of Hispanic communities who
provide health information and advice. The proposed intervention program will have two goals: 1) identify
community members with metabolic syndrome or who are at risk for having a cardiovascular event (e.g. myocardial
infarction or cerebrovascular accident) in the next ten years; and, 2) employ Promotores, lay Hispanic health
workers, to direct an intervention program designed to improve cardiovascular health and eventually lower the
overall health cares costs for the community. The Healthy Tarrant County Collaboration (HTCC) will direct the
program. HTCC has been successful in employing the use of Promotores to improve the health of the Hispanic
community of Tarrant County.
