Timely Assistance Reduces Impact of Recent Budget Cuts

As a result of the mid-year reductions in state funding this year and limited funds available for FY2003-05, the Library was faced with a severely reduced budget for resources. The purchasing power of the resource budget would have been reduced by an estimated $330,000 from its FY2002-03 level. As a result, the Library conducted a thorough review of all its journals and continuing commitments. Recommendations from faculty and students were solicited to help review possible cancellations.

Fortunately, the administration has allocated an additional $250,000 for the resource budget, the minimum needed to support core primary care and research. While this will eliminate the most severe of the anticipated cancellations and maintain current electronic journals and databases, the Library will still have to cancel almost $50-60,000 in resources to compensate for the estimated 10% inflation in journal prices for 2004. With these additional funds, the Library can proceed with the orderly migration of print to electronic journals, the purchase of selected books, computer and AV media, and the binding of essential journals.

A full description of the review project, along with lists of journals by title and subject, are available from the library's home page at:
