Alan Podawiltz, DO, Acting Dean Texas College of Osteopathic MedicineAlan L. Podawiltz, DO, MS, FAPA, is the Interim Vice President for Health Affairs and Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. He is also Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas.

As Interim Vice President for Health Affairs, Dr. Podawiltz oversees one of the nation’s leading osteopathic medical schools. The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) is a state-supported medical school that serves as the cornerstone of the University of North Texas Health Science Center. Named as one of the nation’s top 50 medical schools for primary care by U.S. News and World Report and as the only osteopathic medical school in the state, TCOM is a leader in training physicians skilled in comprehensive primary care and rural medicine. TCOM graduates place highest in the nation on the osteopathic profession’s board scores, and earn spots in some of the most demanding residency programs in the nation, including the Mayo Clinic, the Cleveland Clinic, and Scott & White Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Podawiltz earned a medical degree from Oklahoma State University, College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa, Oklahoma and a master of science in curriculum and instruction from the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. He completed a residency in psychiatry in the department of neuropsychiatry and behavioral sciences at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. 

Dr. Podawiltz is currently serving as vice chair of the board of directors for the State of Texas Joint Admission Medical Program. He has served as vice president and as communications secretary, Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians of Tarrant County.

Since joining TCOM in 2003 as an interim chair in the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Podawiltz has implemented a solid research component in the department of psychiatry, implemented a psychiatric residency program at John Peter Smith Hospital and ultimately created a strong, profitable, service-oriented psychiatry department.
