Effective fall of 2009, all international students at the University of North Texas Health Science Center will be automatically enrolled in the Student Healthcare Insurance Plan, provided by United Healthcare Student Resources. International students are required to carry health insurance the entire time that they are in the United States. In addition, they are also required to carry coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation. The international student population will be the first group of students to be required to have this documentation, with additional groups being added in subsequent semesters.
The U. S. Government has certain requirements for all persons applying for a non-immigrant visa to enter the United States. These include certain financial qualifications including meeting all personal financial liabilities and not becoming a “public charge”. To ensure compliance, the Division of Student Affairs will begin enrolling all international students in this plan unless an insurance waiver is provided by the student prior to the twelfth class day. A waiver may be granted for one of four reasons:
-
The international student has a government-sponsored plan that guarantees payment of all health care expenses including evacuation and repatriation and meets minimum coverage criteria as outlined in the waiver.
-
The insurance premium will also be waived for students who provide documented evidence of health insurance coverage, including evacuation and repatriation, by a U.S. employer.
-
UNTHSC employee insurance (this includes Graduate and Teaching Assistants). Students with UNTHSC provided insurance will only be required to purchase medical evacuation and repatriation coverage.
-
Private Foreign Insurance that meets to minimum coverage criteria.
The cost of the Student Healthcare Insurance Plan will be billed with tuition as part of your fees. You will be enrolled in the coverage unless you provide an insurance waiver form. United Healthcare Student Resources has coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation for $62 per year. All students are required to have this coverage. Please check your existing policy to determine if this is included.
The insurance waiver form and the enrollment form for medical evacuation and repatriation can be obtained and processed through the Student Affairs main office, EAD 247, or below.
