Alumni keep score at annual HSC tradition
HSC alumni who used to work in graduate laboratories and learn about widespread health problems in the classroom used their professionally honed skills to judge student projects at Research Appreciation Day held on campus April 2.
"It was like coming home," said Susie Ramisetty-Mikler , Ph.D , M.P.H. , an SPH graduate who served as a judge for Public Health Student Association awards. "Research is an important part of life - that's what I do for a living, and it was nice to share my expertise!"

Research professionals from Alcon Research, Ltd., Cook Children's Network, and Texas Wesleyan University were also on-hand to critique research projects submitted by more than 100 students, postdoctoral fellows and residents to compete for awards and monetary prizes in nine different poster and oral competitions.
Alumnus Amy Raines , M.P.H. , who works for the City of Fort Worth Public Health Department, was "especially pleased" to see student research on hot public health issues such as health disparities. |
"In addition to learning from student presentations, I was also energized by the enthusiasm and excitement of new students and professionals entering the field," Raines said.
Investing in research and students' professional career has always been the focus of the institutional tradition of RAD, and this year HSC received a surprise gift when a student winner donated half the monetary prize toward the completion of the campus' new Center for BioHealth. The facility, which will house the state's only missing persons' DNA database and research laboratories, will open later this year.
