Summer Public Health Education and Research Experience (SPHERE) Program

The SPHERE program provides an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to gain experience in a research laboratory under the supervision of faculty and senior graduate students. Participants are selected in open competition and must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Eligibility Requirements

  • Junior standing the upcoming fall semester
  • 3.0 minimum cumulative grade point average
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency
  • Major in the life sciences (biology, biochemistry, chemistry, biotechnology, etc.)

  • Information and strategies for financial support in graduate school

Summer Public Health Education and Research Experience

Participants will be awarded faculty-mentored summer research fellowships. These fellowships are full-time ten-week commitments. Fellows will:

  • work with faculty mentor whose research interests are related to their own;
  • receive a stipend
  • write a paper based on the fellow's research results suitable to be published; and
  • develop a computer-assisted oral presentation and a research poster to be presented at the end of the summer program
  • program runs May 25 through July 31, 2009

Housing is included in the program for fellows from outside of the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

The following materials must be submitted by the applicant by March 31, 2009 (This is not a postmark date. All materials must be received by March 31st for consideration):
