The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology provides instruction in the anatomical sciences, develops and maintains research programs and participates in the service endeavors of the institution and profession. Research focues on the eye through leadership and participation in the North Texas Eye Research Institute, a collaborative effort of various basic science disciplines at the health science center, as well as professionals in industry and private ophthalmological practice.

Eye research currently involves projects focusing on retinal degenerations, glaucoma, diabetic complications and cataracts. Other research programs within the department include axon growth and regeneration, cell secretory mechanisms and nervous system inflammatory mechanisms.

In support of the various faculty and student research programs, the department maintains state-of-the-art facilities in microscopy, tissue culture and molecular biology. Over 8,000 square feet of research space is occupied by the department faculty and staff.

Students may participate in degree plans leading to a master of science or doctor of philosophy degree in anatomy and cell biology.
