Safety Program History

In January, 2002, a formalized Safety Program was implemented by Stephen Barrett, Director of Facilities Management for the Health Science Center's Facilities Management Department.

The Safety Program began with mandatory safety meetings for the department's day and night shift staff once a month. The meetings have covered such topics as back safety, ladder usage, electrical safety, fire safety, etc.

Walter Nettles, the Safety Coordinator has gone through extensive training and is a member of the National Association of Safety Professionals. He is responsible for providing the training for the monthly safety meetings, hazmat training, and certification training.

Patricia Dossey , Administrative Specialist is responsible for assisting the Safety Coordinator, which involves holding the training classes when the Safety Coordinator is not available, and helping with all aspects of the Safety Program. She is also responsible for the record keeping for the monthly safety meetings.

In 2005, Terry Morgan, Facilities and Fleet Manager was given the responsibility of the Safety Program. A Safety Manual for all trades has been developed, Safety Incentive Program, and the Safety Web Page has been expanded. Certifications for forklift and CPR are also being implemented.

The Facilities Management Safety Program is dedicated to providing a safe work environment.
