America Reads Program

The America Reads Challenge was initiated by President Clinton in order to ensure that all children will be able to read successfully by the time they leave elementary school. A student must be Work Study eligible in order to participate.

The fundamental purpose of the America Reads Challenge is to enable parents and educators to compliment and expand existing successful literacy efforts to help many more children increase their skills and achievement levels, and to provide children who need additional help in reading with extended learning time.

The President's Coalition for the America Reads Challenge is made up of organizations committed to fulfilling the goal of the America Reads Challenge to ensure that children can read well and independently by the end of the third grade. Members of the Coalition will commit time and resources to building community coalitions for literacy by supporting existing literacy programs and developing new ones where needed, and by recruiting learning partners to work on reading with America's young children from birth through third grade.
