Marc B. Hahn, DO
Biographical Sketch
Marc B. Hahn, DO is the Dean of the University of North Texas Health Science
Center (UNTHSC) at Fort Worth's Texas College of Osteopathic
Medicine. In that role, he oversees the academic, bio-medical research, and
administrative aspects of the medical school, and physician's assistants
program. He is also the Administrator of the physician group practice's
professional liability self-insurance program and the Chair of the Board for UNT
Health, the physician group practice of UNTHSC. Dr. Hahn also serves on multiple
committees for both the medical school and the Health Science Center. These committees involve
institutional policy-making, medical school curriculum design, research program
development, and physician group practice management. He is a tenured professor
of Surgery (Anesthesiology) at the UNTHSC.
Dr. Hahn was a 1998-1999 Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow at
the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in
Washington, District of Columbia. In that capacity, he
served as a Health Advisor to the United States Senate Committee on Finance. In
this role, he was involved with legislative issues pertaining to Medicare,
quality in healthcare, and graduate medical education. In addition, Dr. Hahn
worked closely with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (formerly
HCFA), the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), and many health care
organizations and associations.
Dr. Hahn was formerly a Professor of Anesthesiology and Director of the Pain
Medicine Fellowship Program at the Pennsylvania State University College of
Medicine. While at PSU, he was the Chief of the Pain Medicine and Palliative
Care Division at the Milton S.
Hershey Medical Center. Dr. Hahn also served as the
Government Relations Representative to the Association of American Medical
Colleges for the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. In
2006, the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine's Department of
Anesthesia established the Dr. Marc B. Hahn Pain Medicine Fellowship
Award to honor Dr. Hahn's achievements
and contributions in the field of pain management. This annual award will
recognize the outstanding pain medicine fellow within the division at the
PSU.
Dr. Hahn obtained his undergraduate degree from Syracuse University studying Biology and his medical degree
from Des Moines
University. He completed
his internship and residency in Anesthesiology at the Walter Reed
Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. He then completed a fellowship in Pain
Management through both Georgetown
University and the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of
Health. Dr. Hahn is board certified in anesthesiology with sub-specialty
certification in pain medicine.
Dr. Hahn served for twelve years in the United States Army, prior to an
honorable discharge at the rank of Major. While in the army, Dr. Hahn was
stationed at the Walter Reed Army
Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University. While in the Army, he served
as an anesthesiologist for two United States Presidents.
Dr. Hahn
has served on numerous government committees for the state of Texas, to include the
Academic Senior Advisory Forum on Public Health
Preparedness (Homeland Security), the Cancer Registry and a Medicaid Advisory
Panel. He has also served on the Federation of State
Medical Boards of the United
States’ Regulatory Oversight of Pain Care
Advisory Council and the Pennsylvania Medicare Carrier Advisory
Committee.
Dr. Hahn has served on numerous local Boards of Directors here in Fort Worth, to include: the American Red Cross, Big
Brothers and Big Sisters, the Day
Resource Center for the Homeless, and Plaza Medical Center. He was a member of the Board of
Directors for the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists (PSA). He has served on the Board of Directors,
as well as the President (term 2002-2003) of the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM). Dr. Hahn was the first
osteopathic physician to be elected president of the AAPM, the premier
multi-specialty physician organization committed to the study and practice of
pain management. Dr. Hahn served on
the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Committees for Peri-Operative
Pain Guidelines, Government Affairs, and Economics. Dr. Hahn has served as an
oral examiner and a question writer for the American Board of Anesthesiology
(ABA) since 1993. Dr. Hahn has also served a leadership role on the Board of
Directors for other medical related corporations, medical societies, charitable
organizations, and foundations.
Dr. Hahn has been active in clinical research, having published multiple
abstracts, book chapters, book reviews, editorials, and scientific papers. He
has also received grant funding through the Public Health Service, intramural,
and industry sources for various scientific studies. Dr. Hahn's textbook,
Regional Anesthesia: An Atlas of Anatomy and Technique, was recognized
as the Best New Textbook in Clinical Medicine by the Association of
American Publishers. He is now working on the second edition of this text. He
also served as an associate editor for the 3rd edition of the preeminent and
authoritative textbook, Practical Management of Pain. He has served as
a reviewer for such journals as Anesthesia and Analgesia, Gastroenterology,
American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pain, and MD
Consult. Additionally, he has lectured extensively internationally on
various topics in anesthesiology, pain medicine, medical education, and health
policy.
Dr. Hahn and his wife Robin live in Fort Worth and have two children.
