Is admission into medical school guarenteed?
No, students in the seven-year program are subject to same admissions review process as those who apply through the traditional program. However, students in this program are being considered for admission one year earlier.
How many students do you admit into this program each year?
We do
not have a limit in the number of students we take into this program. However,
you should have a strong academic record of achievement during high school. We
also recommend that you should also explore a career in medicine by being
involved in health-related activities and shadow physicians before considering
this program.
What is the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)?
The MCAT is a
test that assess your skills and knowledge in preparation for medical
school. It is divided into four sections: verbal reasoning, physicial
sciences, biological sciences and writing. The first three sections are scored
on a 1-15 point scale. The writing portion of the test is letter graded from
J-T. This test is one of more challenging tasks for premedical students.
It helps the medical student admissions committee better understand your
strengths and weaknesses in both the science and non-science areas.
Is there a minimum SAT or ACT score for admission?
The
undergraduate admission requirements are posted on the University of North Texas and University of Texas at Dallas web site.
The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine does not require these exams.
What is a D.O.?
D.O.s and M.D.s are the only two kinds of
fully-licensed physicians in the United States. They practice in every field of
medicine, such as family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics,
obstetrics/gynecology, surgery, emergency medicine, anesthesiology, orthopedics,
aerospace medicine and geriatrics. D.O.s use the "whole patient" approach in
treating patients. Rather than treating a specific illness, D.O.s are taught to
consider the patient's diet, excecise habits, physicial and emotional stresses,
genetics, life history, environment and occupation and its possible affects to

I am not a resident of Texas, should I apply for this program?
As a
state-supported medical school, we are required to have at least 90% of our
students from the state. Therefore, it is very difficult to gain admission as a
non-resident. We would strongly caution you against this program.
I have already taken some classes at a community (or four-year
university), can I transfer into this program?
You must take all of your
undergraduate courses at either the University of North Texas or the University
of Texas at Dallas depending on where you plan to complete the first three years
of the program..
I already have a degree, should I consider going to medical school through
this program?
We do not accept students into this program who already
have a degree. It is better for you to take the premedical requirements as a
post-baccalaureate student. Most colleges and universities offer the required
courses which you can take as a non-degree seeking student.
What other activities should I be involved in while taking my
undergraduate classes?
We strongly encourage that students to participate
in health-related and community service activities. These activities will give
the admissions committee some indication of your interest in a career medicine
and your desire to help others. In addition, we would suggest that you seek out
an experience with an osteopathic physician. Other experiences you may want to
pursue are research experiences, student government or other organizations that
will enhance your interpersonal and team work skills.
I am entering college as an older student, can I apply for this
program?
Age is not a factor in the admissions process. So long as you
meet the requirements of the program, you are eligible to participate.
I am coming to the United States as an international student, should I
consider this program?
International students are classified as
non-residents. As a state-supported medical school, we are required to have at
least 90% of our students from the state. As with all prospective non-resident
students, we strongly caution you against this program.
Do you accept AP credit?
Yes, AP credit is accepted so long as it
is accepted by the undergraduate institution you wish to attend. The AP credit
must appear on your undergraduate transcript with the specific course and number
of credits awarded.
