Geriatric Fellowship Program
Curriculum
Components
Research
Coursework includes biostatistics, research methodology, and epidemiological
methods in health and social services management. Fellows are
assigned to mentors who integrate them into existing seminar courses
on
the three campuses and help them select a research topic. Ongoing
research on the three campuses occurs in the biology of aging,
health promotion and older adults, long-term care system development,
and geriatric care and practice.
Teaching
Educational seminars include communication skills, patient management,
personnel management, and instruction in the planning and development
of instructional materials and educational evaluation materials.
Fellows are given an opportunity to prepare and present materials
to a variety of groups in a variety of settings.
Administration
Fellows audit courses in total quality management for healthcare
aging service programs, computer applications in long-term
care, and housing for the elderly. Each fellow also attends
appropriate
professional organization meetings such as those held by
the American Medical Directors Association and works as a medical
director for
six months.
Geriatrics Clinical Care
The didactic curriculum will include block rotations and
longitudinal experiences. Fellows work in acute-care
hospital, nursing home
care unit, hospital-based home care, geropsychiatric
care unit, rehabilitative/restorative
unit and assisted living facilities. Longitudinal experiences
