John A. Harman, MBA, CPA, CGMA, CMPE is Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the University of North Texas Health Science Center and UNT Health.
As senior fiscal officer for the institution, John is responsible for all aspects of financial operations at the Health Science Center and clinical enterprise with annual budget responsibility approaching $250 million. He provides leadership, expertise, direction and oversight of financial accounting and reporting, budgeting and forecasting, financial planning and analysis, debt, investment and cash-flow management, contracts and business development.
John works closely with the University President, Executive Vice President for Clinical Affairs & CEO of UNT Health and other executive leaders in driving the strategic direction of the organization. He is treasurer and ex-officio member of the UNT Health Board of Directors, serves on numerous institutional and UNT System committees and works closely with colleagues at peer affiliated healthcare institutions. John has an adjunct Associate Professor appointment in the Department of Health Management and Policy in the UNTHSC School of Public Health.
Following a national search, John joined the Health Science Center administrative leadership team in December 2006. Before arriving in Fort Worth, he was Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at West Virginia University’s clinical enterprise at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center. Under his leadership, the faculty practice group experienced five years of significant operational and financial growth. Harman also spent five years as Executive Director for Finance and Administration with the Department of Family Medicine at James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University.
John holds active CPA licenses in Tennessee and Texas and has achieved the Chartered Global Management Accountant designation (CGMA). He earned a bachelor's degree (BBA) in business administration with a major in accountancy and a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) from the AACSB accredited College of Business and Technology at East Tennessee State University. He was a member of Gamma Beta Phi and Beta Alpha Psi academic honor societies. John has certification as a medical practice executive (CMPE) from the American College of Medical Practice Executives.
