Police Department welcomes new chief

Gary Gailliard was sworn in as chief of the Health Science Center Police Department on Monday, April 23. He brings 30 years of law enforcement experience — 24 of which were spent in a university environment.  And, he’s no stranger to a growing campus…he spent the last five years as assistant chief at UNT Denton and established the police department at UNT’s Dallas Campus.

His said his first priority as chief is to see that the department meets the national standards to receive accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The department is currently reviewing its policies for the self-assessment phase of the accreditation process.

Chief Gailliard has had a busy first few weeks. As soon as he arrived on campus he assisted with team members from facilities and the safety office in reviewing and updating our emergency preparedness plan in response to the shootings at Virginia Tech. The updated plan will be available after review by the UNT System Board of Regents.  All three UNT campuses will present their plans to the Board for review next week.

Another of Chief Gailliard’s goals is to maintain the low crime rate and safe, secure environment on and around campus.  He said that won’t be hard to do with the “dedicated group of professionals” already on staff at the department.
