Randy Jones named president of UNT Health physician group
After evaluating candidates from across the nation for the new position of president and chief executive officer of the Health Science Center’s physician practice plan, a search committee selected Jones, who has been directing clinical operations and business services at the Health Science Center for seven years. In accepting the committee’s recommendation, President Scott Ransom noted that Jones’ understanding of the operations of a large academic physician practice, plus his familiarity with the medical staff and physicians in Tarrant County, made him “the optimal selection.” Jones said, “I’m very excited to have the opportunity to continue as the permanent president of UNT Health, and I look forward to leading our group to its goal of becoming the preeminent multi-specialty group practice in Tarrant County.”
During his tenure at UNT Health, Jones has helped the 160-plus physician multi-specialty practice more than double its revenue growth and has greatly improved its overall financial performance through the aggressive automation of critical business functions. He has also led the practice toward implementation of an electronic medical record system and developed a self-insurance program for professional liability coverage for physicians and allied health providers. Jones had been serving as interim president of the practice plan since the new leadership position was established in March.
As president of UNT Health, Jones will be responsible for the practice plan’s strategic planning, practice operations, finance, risk management, quality improvement, marketing, communications, business development, and the development of successful clinical partnerships with area health-related organizations.
Before joining the Health Science Center in 2000, Jones served as director of network operations and contracting at the Parkland Community Health Plan in Dallas, and held various senior-level positions in finance, managed care and operations for the Department of Defense and the U.S. Air Force Medical Services at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
Jones holds a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Nebraska, Omaha; a master’s degree in finance and economics from the University of Oklahoma; and is currently a doctoral candidate at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is board certified in both health care management and physician group practice management and is a fellow of both the American College of Healthcare Executives and American College of Medical Practice Executives.Co-chairing the search committee were Dr. Elizabeth Palmarozzi, chair of family and community medicine and a 1984 TCOM graduate, and Christine Kalish, executive director to the president. Members of the search committee were: Roy Brooks, Tarrant County commissioner; David Cecero, CEO of JPS Health Network; Stan Dennis, senior vice president for managed care, Texas Health Resources; Dr. Arvind Nana, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery; Dr. Alan Podawiltz, chair of psychiatry, behavioral health and neuroscience; Troy Villarreal, chief executive officer, Plaza Medical Center of Fort Worth; and Dr. Al Yurvati, chair of surgery and a 1986 TCOM graduate.
