Dr. Damon Schranz, assistant professor of family and community medicine, gave tips on protecting yourself from colds and viruses this winter in major media outlets across the country, including the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Who’s new at the HSC
Our news release on recent faculty appointments was picked up by at least 21 media outlets including several business journals, Forbes.com, Marketwatch and Calibre Macro World. On Monday, the Star-Telegram and the Fort Worth Business Press included announcements about our new faculty appointments.
Ask a Doc
Dr. Travis Motley, podiatrist in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, responded to a question about a needle in the foot in the Star-Telegram's "Ask a Doc" column. The Star-Telegram also featured Dr. John Fling, chair and associate professor of pediatrics, in its "Ask a Doc" column regarding allergies and Christmas trees.
Texas infant mortality numbers
Dr. Katie Cardarelli, assistant professor of epidemiology, was quoted in several regional publications, including the Austin American-Statesman, as an expert in infant mortality. The article examines a study which showed the infant mortality rate in Texas jumped 8.6 percent between 2000 and 2004, while the rate in Travis County jumped 21 percent during the same time period.
‘Baby Grace’ mystery solved
The Center for Human Identification was named in several articles, including one in The (Galveston) Daily News, as the facility conducting DNA testing on the "Baby Grace" remains found in Galveston. The mother of Riley Ann Sawyers confessed to killing the two-year-old within days of her remains being sent to our DNA lab.
