Dr. MoranetzThe Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved a new Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Health Sciences degree program at the UNT Health Science Center's School of Public Health.

The program prepares professionals for research, teaching and service to improve the health of populations. The primary focus is on research that advances knowledge and facilitates discovery regarding interventions and policies that promote health at the individual, community, societal and/or global levels.

The curriculum will provide a strong foundation in research theories, applications and methodology; critical analysis; scientific communications; professional ethics; and discovery and translational research. Students will be able to select advanced training in behavioral and community health; biostatistics; epidemiology; environmental health sciences; and health services and policy.

The program was developed under the leadership of Christine Moranetz, PhD, chair of the Public Health Education and associate dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Public Health.  The program director is Karan Singh, PhD, professor and chair of Biostatistics.

"This new program is an important step toward helping prepare UNTHSC students to become the next generation of public health scientists in academic, research and other professional roles. We are pleased to offer this opportunity," said Richard Kurz, PhD, dean of the School of Public Health.
