Knowledge means health for military families
Military personnel and their families are getting armed with information - free, accurate medical and health information--thanks to the UNT Health Science Center. UNTHSC's Gibson D. Lewis Library is piloting a new program called Armed with Information, which shows military personnel and their families how to use the internet to find free accurate health information. The pilot debuted Dec. 8 at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth. Military personnel including reservists, retirees, spouses and children browsed the "Technology Petting Zoo," a collection of 20 assorted e-readers and tablets that gives participants hands-on practice with internet medical info.
UNTHSC's Gibson D. Lewis Library is an official Resource Library of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. Lewis Library is the Network's medical and health resource library for 28 Texas counties, serving more than 3 million people. The Library also is the primary information resource for all Texas' osteopathic physicians and facilities.Since 1980, the Lewis Library has provided outreach to health professionals, hospitals, clinics, community-based organizations, independent care facilities, researchers and legal consultants in the medical and health fields. The Library also offers services to businesses, organizations and individuals, primarily in the Fort Worth area including:
- health literacy programming targeting lower income communities in Fort Worth
- instructing public health practitioners in the use of mobile technologies and information resources
- health literacy programming instructing seniors in Tarrant County in communicating effectively with physicians.
The next Armed with Information event, a senior-health information workshop in a computer lab, is scheduled Jan. 19 at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls.
