UNTHSC and the Cowtown: By the numbers

On Feb. 22-24, close to 400 UNT Health Science Center faculty, staff and student volunteers contributed to one of the most successful Cowtown races and expos ever conducted in its 35-year history.

The Health Science Center, as a Cowtown sponsor, participated by:

  • Heading the medical team with Darrin D'Agostino, DO, MPH, serving as medical director, assisted by 209 UNTHSC volunteers. More than 250 participants visited the tent, and no major medical issues were discovered.
  • Hosting a Health Fair where attendees could get up to eight free screenings. UNTHSC volunteers provided 241 soft tissue treatments and 480 glucose screenings.

The Health Science Center's participation helped get the university's name in the community in a number of ways. Volunteers distributed 10,000 tubes of lip balm with UNT Health's appointment line printed on them, 3,000 branded collapsible water bottles and numerous brochures.

UNTHSC fielded a running team of more than 120, all wearing UNTHSC shirts. Student Heinz Schwarzkopf (TCOM '16) placed second overall.

More than 400 people were photographed with our Mr. Medical Incredible mascot and downloaded their photos from our Flickr site. Three UNTHSC-related stories aired on NBC5, two were printed in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and one was posted on the Dallas Morning News website.

This Cowtown, founded by the Health Science Center, celebrated its 35th anniversary this year. The weekend:

  • Attracted a record 26,835 runners over six races
  • Generated $30,000 for C.A.L.F. (Children's Activities for Life and Fitness), the Cowtown's charity, which promotes children's wellness and distributes free running shoes to kids who need them.
