UNTHSC official to help lead the state's health planning

UNTHSC Andy CrimAndrew Crim, Executor Director of Professional and Continuing Education, is a newly appointed member of the Statewide Health Coordinating Council.

One of only two university representatives on the 17-member council, he will help guide policy makers in meeting Texans' health care needs.

"The SHCC gives our university and our community a strong voice in how the governor and Legislature allocate health resources," Crim said. "For example, the council's current priorities are to increase funding for pharmacy schools; keep Texas-educated health care providers in-state; and support primary care, prevention, medical ‘homes' and access to health professionals of all types - all important issues to UNTHSC."

SHCC members are appointed by the governor and approved by the Texas Senate. The council's broad purpose is to ensure health care services and facilities are available to all Texans through health planning activities. SHCC makes recommendations to the governor and the Legislature through the Texas State Health Plan, and also provides overall guidance in the development of the health plan, submission of the plan to the governor and promoting the plan's implementation.

Crim's journey to this appointment began when he volunteered to serve in the Down Syndrome Partnership of North Texas after his son Parker, now 7, was born with the extra chromosome that causes Down syndrome. That led to Crim's first gubernatorial appointment, on the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities, where he's now the board's vice chair. That, in turn, led to his latest appointment.

In his UNTHSC capacity, Crim helps the PACE department develop nationally recognized programs for physicians and other health care professionals all over the U.S. to keep their skills sharp. PACE serves as many as 18,000 health care providers each year with more than 600 activities across the U.S. and online.
