golfcourse.jpg The Second Annual Sonny Singh Open golf tournament will take place June 27 at Pecan Valley Golf Course.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit UNT Health Science Center’s Institute for Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease Research and students from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. The four-person scramble will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Registration for the event will be $40 for students and $60 for non-students. The fee will include a T-shirt, a round of golf and a Mexican buffet served at the end of the tournament. Prizes will be given for a hole in one and closest to the pin in addition to the winning team prize.

To register for the tournament, contact Matt Hubert at matt_hubert@vwr.com. The tournament will be limited to 72 players, so registration is on a first come, first served basis.

The co-sponsors for this year’s tournament are VWR International and various distributors that they represent.

The first Sonny Singh Open, held at Squaw Creek Golf Course, began as a way for friends and colleagues to get together and have fun. The event was organized by Meharvan “Sonny” Singh, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience at UNT Health Science Center, and his wife, Preeti Singh. The registration fees were just enough to cover the expenses of the tournament, which included a round of golf and T-shirt with the Sonny Singh Open logo.

“This year, the Sonny Singh Open will be larger in terms of participants,” Dr. Singh said. “More importantly, the commercial sponsorship of this tournament will enable most of the proceeds to go toward graduate awards and stipends for travel to scientific meetings.”
