The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) Class of 2008 scored the best in the nation on the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) Level 2, marking the second consecutive year the medical school has been the top performer on this exam. The class, which performed best in the nation for all osteopathic medical schools, also had a 100 percent pass rate on this challenging examination.
"We have shown a consistent climb toward this position through an unrelenting commitment of our faculty and through a clear vision from our academic administrators," said Marc B. Hahn, D.O., dean of the medical school. "All of our students have responded each and every time the ‘bar was raised' by out-performing year after year.
"This past June our Class of 2009's COMLEX 1 performance was also the top in the nation. We remain, without a doubt, the top osteopathic medical school in the nation. What continues to be impressive is that this climb to number one status was accomplished during a period in which we have grown the medical school class size by more than 40 percent -- a feat that has yet to be equaled by any other medical school in the nation - either osteopathic (D.O.) or allopathic (M.D.)."
These scores were reported just days after Hispanic Business Magazine announced that TCOM ranked No. 12 in their Top 20 Medical Schools for Hispanics - a recognition received by TCOM three of the past four years.
All states require medical students to pass a licensing exam before they receive licenses to practice medicine. The M.D. equivalent is the United States Medical License Examination (USMLE).
More than 600 students are enrolled at TCOM, a growth of more than 1,500 percent since the school's inception 38 years ago. TCOM graduates provide primary and specialty medical and surgical care across the nation and bring to their patients the unique benefits of osteopathic diagnosis and treatment, while emphasizing patient education, disease prevention, good nutrition and fitness.
