International Conference on Advances in Osteopathic Research

The seventh International Conference on Advances in Osteopathic Research (ICAOR) was held in Bradenton, Florida September 5-7, 2008. John C. Licciardone, DO, M.S., M.B.A., the Executive Director of The Osteopathic Research Center (ORC), gave the keynote address for the seventh International Conference on Advances in Osteopathic Medicine. ORC researchers Lisa Hodge, PhD, and H. Fred Downey, PhD, also spoke at the conference, which was co-sponsored by the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine-Bradenton (Fla.). Dr. Hodge serves as the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation Basic Science Research Chair for the ORC, and Dr. Downey is a Regents Professor and Principal Investigator at the ORC. Dr. Hodge received the Best Established Investigator Award at the conference.

International Research Symposium on Somato-Visceral Interactions and Autonomic Mechanisms of Manual Therapy

Leading clinicians from the manual therapy professions and scientists investigating effects of somatic inputs on autonomic and visceral function met in Fort Worth, Texas on March 31-April 1, 2008 to discuss clinical impressions and state-of-the-art data of somatic stimulation on autonomic and visceral function from peripheral tissues and spinal and central nervous system levels.

Conference participants will articipate in a modified Delphi process by email to contribute to a consensus paper on the current status, research priorities and challenges in identifying somato-visceral interactions, mechanisms and treatment outcomes.

Advancing Osteopathy 2008 Conference

John C. Licciardone, DO, MS, MBA, executive director of the ORC, delivered the Keynote Address to open the Advancing Osteopathy 2008 Conference in London, England on February 1. The international conference was held in conjunction with the General Osteopathic Council meeting February 1 through February 3 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the United Kingdom Statutory Register of Osteopaths. The showcase event attracted over 1,000 delegates, including American osteopathic physicians and other osteopathic practitioners, researchers, and educators from across the globe. Dr. Licciardone’s presentation, sponsored by the National Council for Osteopathic Research, was entitled "What's the Evidence? Osteopathy Answers Back." The presentation applauded the achievements of osteopathic researchers and offered suggestions for future research directions.

Dr. Licciardone also gave another presentation entitled “Educating Osteopaths to be Researchers – What Role Should Research Methods and Statistics have in an Undergraduate Curriculum?” on February 3 as part of the symposium on Criticality, Research, Scholarship, and Teaching. His presentation focused on the integration of research methods, statistics, and evidence-based medicine in the osteopathy curriculum, and will be published as an upcoming commentary article in the International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine.
