After many months of work by the DrPH and PhD committees, which have been chaired by Drs. Singh and Moranetz, the School of Public Health is excited to provide you with information about their new doctoral programs.
DrPH in Public Health Practice
The Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree in Public Health Practice is an indication of distinguished scholarly accomplishment in the professional field. The goal of the DrPH program is to provide advanced training in public health leadership for individuals who will serve in a variety of roles within government, private and not-for-profit organizations. The DrPH program requires a minimum of 60 semester credit hours (SCH) and is offered on a full time or part-time basis. For more information, review the following documents:
PhD in Public Health Sciences
The School of Public Health anticipates offering the PhD in Public Health Sciences program in Fall 2010. A draft 4-Year Curriculum Plan has been developed. The PhD program in Public Health Sciences prepares professionals for research, teaching, and service with the overall objective of improving the health of populations.To meet this objective, all students in the program pursue excellence in conducting research and disseminating knowledge.The primary focus is on research that advances knowledge and facilitates discovery regarding etiology, interventions, and policies that promote health at the individual, population, societal, and/or global levels. Advanced training will be available in the following concentrations:
- Biostatistics
- Epidemiology
- Environmental Health Sciences
- Health Disparities
- Health Services and Policy
Procedures for Current Students to Transfer to a New Doctoral Program
- Students who have completed more than 21 SCH of doctoral course work will be considered for transfer to the new DrPH Generalist program if they submit a Request for Change of Advisor, Concentration or Degree Program form and an updated Statement of Professional Goals. Students considering this option should be in good academic standing and must be competitive in terms of grade point average and GRE scores with the incoming cohort of DrPH students (contact OSAS for specific details). To be considered for the new program, students must submit all required materials to the Office of Student & Academic Services by 5 p.m. on Monday, July 20. Additional information is available on the Transfer Process to DrPH Program timeline. Students who enter the new DrPH Generalist program in Fall 2009 should be prepared to take DrPH required courses through Spring 2011.
- Regardless of the number of hours completed, students in the departmental DrPH concentrations may request a transfer to the PhD program by submitting a Request for Change of Advisor, Concentration or Degree Program form and an updated Statement of Professional Goals to OSAS. To be considered for the new program, students must submit all required materials to the Office of Student & Academic Services by 5 p.m. on Monday, July 27. Additional information is available on the Transfer Process to PhD Program timeline. Students who enter the new PhD program should be prepared to take PhD required courses through Spring 2012.
