Rural Medicine

Part of the Health Science Center's mission is to meet the needs of rural and underserved populations. One strategy used to accomplish this is to offer medical students a unique educational experience in rural medicine. The Rural Family Medicine Track, created and implemented by the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine Department of Family Medicine, is a longitudinal program designed to prepare students for family practice in a rural community. Under the supervision of osteopathic family physicians in more than 20 rural clinical settings across the state, students develop their clinical competence by participating in patient care. They become actively involved in community-based activities, learn about the role a physician plays in the community and experience the unique qualities of a rural lifestyle.
