The
highest quality audiologic care and supportive services can
help determine whether musicians are at risk for noise-induced
hearing loss. Through the Center’s program on musicians’ hearing
preservation, Dr. Miriam Henoch is developing novel techniques
such as in-situ measures of ear canal resonance and instrument
specific effects, and otoacoustic emission testing to develop
early prevention strategies for musicians.
Other research studies are ongoing to help understand short
and long term effects on hearing sensitivity associated with
various levels of music exposure. Dosimeters are used to determine
levels of exposure throughout a rehearsal, performance or full
day of music teaching. Graduate students, from both music and
the health sciences, participate in research projects and learn
to collaborate in a multidisciplinary setting.
