Sound
Level Studies
Performing
in certain music settings may put musicians at risk for noise-induced
hearing loss. Researchers at the Texas Center for Music &
Medicine are using Quest noise dosimeters to determine the sound
pressure levels in various music settings. This research is
determining risk factors associated with ensemble and instrument
types and various positions within ensembles. Measurements are
compared to OSHA Risk Criteria (1983) to determine the potential
for noise-induced hearing loss. To date, results obtained from
several college-level ensembles indicate that sound pressure
levels do exceed the risk criteria levels established by OSHA.
