The
UNT Musician Health Survey
The University
of North Texas Musician Health Survey (UNT-MHS) is a large-scale
musician survey conducted over the Internet. The online survey
was developed and launched onto the World Wide Web in the Fall
of 1998 and is an ongoing research project. Respondents to the
survey include over 4000 musicians representing over twenty
five different styles.
The survey
provides valuable insight into the demographic, vocational and
economic profiles of musicians as well as information on musculoskeletal
and non-musculoskeletal problems associated with playing a musical
instrument. Comparisons of data obtained from the UNT-MHS to
the U.S. census data indicate that demographic profiles and
geographic representation of respondents compare favorably.
To date, musicians of all ages from all states within the U.S.
continue to respond to the survey.
The results
of this survey are being used to develop additional epidemiological
surveys of musician groups. The UNT Musician Health Survey is
located at: http://www.scs.unt.edu/surveys/msurvey/../index.html.
This project
is funded in part through research grants from the National
Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (Grammys).
