Drug
and Alcohol Use Among Musicians
The diversity
of the music population requires clinical and psychological
flexibility to address their needs and concerns. These concerns
include, but are not limited to, performance anxiety, drug and
alcohol abuse, communication, goal setting, perfectionism and
stress. Researchers at the Texas Center for Music and Medicine
are identifying variables associated with why and when many
musicians experience these career threatening problems.
Current
investigations are designed to determine the effectiveness of
educational strategies that incorporate music education initiatives
designed to counter the perception of drug and alcohol abuse
among middle school music students. Funding for this project
is currently being sought.
