The University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) in Fort Worth is dedicated to providing a healthier future for a changing world by fostering discovery through research (www.hsc.unt.edu). Since its designation as a Health Science Center in 1993, research at UNTHSC has grown faster than at any other HSC in the state. The research involves a continuum from basic discovery and clinical research to clinical trials, public health, and outcomes research and ultimately to translational research and product development. Technology transfer moves new discoveries from the laboratory to the marketplace where maximal benefit to society can be realized. Research at UNTHSC involves active partnerships with other academic institutions, government laboratories and the pharmaceutical, medical device and biotechnology industries. The research interfaces with the community by spinning off intellectual property into the Fort Worth MedTech Incubator and by providing training and research services to local industries. Training of scientists and physician researchers occurs through its colleges: The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, the School of Public Health, and Physicians Assistants program.
Origins
of Research at the Institution
The Center was founded
in 1970 as the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine with
a mission focused on primary care. In 1972 a relationship
was established with the University of North Texas
(UNT), and in 1975 the institution became a state supported
medical school sharing UNT's board of regents. By the
90's the institution was leading the state's eight
medical schools in the proportion of graduates in family
medicine. The Texas Legislature designated the medical
school as a health science center in 1993 and the Graduate
School of Biomedical Sciences began offering the masters
and doctorate degrees. In 1997 the School of Public Health
was added to the Center. Currently, the UNTHSC employs approximately
1200 faculty and staff.
