Public/Private Partnerships in Life Science R&D
An Open Discussion and Case Study from North Carolina


Located in Kannapolis, North Carolina, less than 30 minutes from Charlotte, is the
North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC). The NCRC is the vision of David Murdock to create a public-private research life science campus focused on driving research, commercialization, and innovation at the interface of human health, nutrition, and agriculture.   

To date, Mr. Murdock has invested over $600 million and has built over 800,000 sf of state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities to host academic and industry scientists.  These include researchers from the life science industry, the USDA, and seven campuses of the University of North Carolina system and Duke University.  

Our presenter will not only highlight the successes of this new initiative, but will add color to potential challenges to replicating this model.

In his current position, Mr. Higgs is primarily responsible for recruiting new business and venture capital partners for the North Carolina Research Campus project located in Kannapolis, NC. Prior to joining the NCRC, Clyde was the executive director of the technology incubator program, TECH Fort Worth, associated with at the University of North Texas-Health Science Center.  While in Texas, he was one of the original appointees by Governor Rick Perry to serve on the Texas Emerging Technology Fund Board.  Before Clyde’s post in Texas, he was the Director for the Office of Technology Transfer & Commercialization at North Carolina A&T State University. There, Clyde was responsible for developing the overall economic development and intellectual property strategy for the university.  

Currently he serves as a member of several community, non-profit boards, including the NC State University College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Research Foundation, ECU Medical School Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sister and the French-American Chamber of Commerce North Carolina (FACCNC). In December 2011, Clyde was appointed by NC Governor, Bev Perdue to serve as a trustee for 58 school Community College System. In 2007, Clyde received the Paul Harris Fellowship from the Kannapolis Rotary Club for his efforts in helping to launch the life sciences center. 

Clyde has roots in North Carolinas and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  He is married to Dr. Vetta Higgs and they have one son.
