New dean for the School of Public Health will join us Sept. 4

A national search that began in March successfully ended this month with the announcement that Dr. Richard Kurz, dean of St. Louis University’s School of Public Health for the past eight years, will be the second dean of the Health Science Center’s School of Public Health. He replaces Dr. Fernando Treviño, who had returned to a full-time faculty role and recently was named chancellor of Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

At St. Louis, Dr. Kurz led four individual and seven joint public health degree programs. During his tenure, research funding increased from $500,000 to $40 million and student enrollment increased 40 percent. Dr. Kurz has served on the Association of Schools of Public Health executive committee and as chair of the board of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration. He is currently a member of the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education. Dr. Kurz received the 2002 Certificate of Merit Award from the Missouri Public Health Association.

Dr. Jerry Simecka, chair of molecular biology and immunology, and Dr. Thomas Yorio, senior vice president for research and dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, led the search committee. Members of the committee were: Dr. Harvey Brenner, chair of social and behavioral sciences; Lou Brewer, director of the Tarrant County Public Health Department; Dr. Katie Cardarelli, assistant professor of epidemiology and a 1999 GSBS graduate; Dr. Eric Johnson, chair of epidemiology; Amy Raines, a Women’s Health Initiative team leader for the City of Fort Worth Public Health Department and a 1999 SPH graduate; Dr. Bernie Rubin, chief of rheumatology; Dr. Karan Singh, chair of biostatistics; Dr. Ximena Urrutia-Rojas, associate professor of social and behavioral sciences; and Val Wilkie Jr., executive director of the Sid Richardson Foundation, which has been a longtime supporter of the Health Science Center’s public health initiatives.
