Black Chamber honors Marie Holliday, UNTHSC Foundation board member

Fort Worth dentist Marie Holliday, DMD, a member of the board of the UNT Health Science Center Foundation, received the Business Woman of the Year Award Wednesday during the 21st Annual Women's Business Conference and Eagle Awards Luncheon.

The event is presented annually by the Fort Worth Metropolitan Black Chamber, Women's Division.

A Fort Worth native known to her patients as Doc Holliday, she operates several businesses in addition to the private dental practice she opened in 1979. Dr. Holliday also sponsors many community events that help put the city on the map, said Kim Agoro, President of Wellness Village, who presented the award.

"She is a boon to the community, and someone who has inspired many of us," she said.  "She is an entrepreneurial trail blazer. That is why we are honoring Doc Holliday."

Holliday said she was honored to accept the award.

"This brings joy and happiness to my soul," she said. "I love Fort Worth."

Early in her career, Holliday saw an opportunity in the development of Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth, said Mrs. Agoro, last year's recipient of the Business Woman of the Year Award.

"She felt African Americans should have a presence there," she said.

She set out to make that happen, opening her dental practice, a flower shop and a perfumery in downtown Fort Worth.

She has served on numerous boards and been active with more than a dozen organizations, including Tarrant County Arts Council, Boy Scouts of America and the First Texas Council of Camp Fire.

Holliday graduated from Boston University and Tufts School of Dental Medicine. She has served on the UNT Health Science Center Foundation Board since 2010.
