SAGE program to be honored at the Senior Spirit Awards ceremony


UNTHSC SAGE Mentor and StudentThe UNT Health Science Center SAGE (Seniors Assisting in Geriatric Education) program will be honored this week during the Senior Spirit Awards Ceremony.

The ceremony is an annual fundraising event, benefiting Senior Citizen Services, a nonprofit association dedicated to empowering older adults throughout Tarrant County to live with purpose, independence and dignity.

When:  11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19

Where: Cendera Center, 3600 Benbrook Hwy., Fort Worth

What's in store:  The SAGE program is the recipient of the Mae Cora Peterson Healthy Aging Award, which recognizes innovative programs or approaches that improve the health and independence of older adults in Tarrant County. 

The SAGE program, led by Janice Knebl, D.O., Chief of the UNT Health Science Center's Division of Geriatrics, links medical students with UNT Health geriatrics patients and older adults in the Meals on Wheels program. Students meet with the older patients periodically, then address home safety, medical history, the physiology of aging and medications.
